Susan Munro has advised financial institutions, multinational companies, and investment funds on disputes, regulatory and investment matters for more than 20 years. During this time, she has been active in Hong Kong and China-related arbitrations, representing clients in disputes before various international arbitral institutions, and has advised clients in connection with cross-border litigation involving the Hong Kong SAR, mainland China, the UK, the US and other jurisdictions. In her international regulatory practice, Ms Munro assists clients with various US, UK and European Union regulatory compliance matters, including data privacy, anti-corruption, anti-money laundering, economic sanctions, and trade control matters. For the past 18 years she has also worked on numerous US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and UK Bribery Act investigations, risk assessments and compliance reviews in China and Southeast Asia. Ms Munro also assists clients with China market entry and exit strategies, mergers and acquisitions and financial and strategic investments, and has extensive experience of a wide range of Chinese industry sectors. Ms Munro is fluent in Putonghua, and reads and writes Chinese. Before joining Steptoe & Johnson HK in 2020, she was a registered foreign lawyer in the Beijing office of Steptoe & Johnson LLP for 10 years and prior to that she worked for a US law firm in Shanghai for 10 years. Ms Munro is co-chair of the ICC International Court of Arbitration Belt & Road Initiative Commission and supports various other arbitration and business organisations in the region.
