As a treaty administered by the International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva, the Madrid Protocol allows trade mark owners to have their trademarks protected in multiple jurisdictions by simply filing one application directly with their own national or regional trademark office. Given its relevance to businesses in Hong Kong, an important financial centre and gateway between China and the rest of the world, Ms Elsie Tse, Assistant Director of Intellectual Property (Trademarks) of the Intellectual Property Department of the Hong Kong SAR, and Ms Theresa Mak, Executive of Rouse & Co. International (Overseas), were invited to share on this topic. The talk introduced the concept of intellectual property and related laws as well as gave an in-depth elaboration on its key features and implementation in the Hong Kong context, highlighting the pivotal role played by Hong Kong legal professionals in this process.
