Transnational Corporations and International Law

Organiser:
Asian Academy of International Law

With transnational corporations being one of the driving forces for globalisation, this event, led by Mr Hu Bin, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, focused on current trends of transnational corporations and international law. After the opening remarks from Dr Anthony Neoh, Chairman of the Academy, Mr Hu elaborated on how the expansion of transnational corporations might affect and subsequently challenge a series of legal instruments and the core principles and guidelines involved that were established by UN for the purpose of human rights protection. He then considered various issues pertinent to investor-State dispute settlement reform, impacts on transnational corporations, and the balance of interests between those corporations and host States. Lastly, concerning long-arm sanctions, Mr Hu examined various non-forced enforcement measures, extra-territorial applications, and different cases of sanctions.
