Deal-Making and Dispute Resolution in the Digital Economy: The Role of the Judiciary

Aiming to promote the rule of law and facilitate uniform application and interpretation of international trade law instruments by judiciaries across the Asia-Pacific region, this event entailed the Judicial Conference that attracted over 180 local and overseas participants, encompassing highly esteemed government officials, judges, academics, legal practitioners and other professionals, as well as the Judicial Roundtable, a closed-door platform for over 30 judges from different jurisdictions to meet and deliberate on issues related to dispute resolution. Distinguished speakers included Mr Justice Andrew Cheung, Permanent Judge of Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal, Ms Teresa Cheng, Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong SAR, Ms Anna Joubin-Bret, the Secretary of UNCITRAL, Professor Ignacio Tirado, Secretary-General of UNIDROIT, Dr Anthony Neoh, Chairman of the Academy, Ms Athita Komindr, Head of the Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific of UNCITRAL etc. Apart from the signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Department of Justice of the Hong Kong SAR and the Judiciary of Thailand and the United Nations respectively, various pivotal topics were addressed, including ‘International Financing Using Moveable Assets as Security’, ‘Supply Chain Financing and the Digital Economy’, ‘Menu of Options for Dispute Resolution’, in particular focusing on arbitration, mediation and litigation.
