The Asian Academy of International Law (the Academy) is pleased to announce that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was made between the Academy and the Department of Justice of the Government of the Hong Kong SAR on the Sponsorship of Selected Candidates of the Judicial Fellows Programme (the Programme) of the International Court of Justice (the ICJ) on 8 October 2020.

The Programme was established in 1999 by the ICJ to enable recent law graduates to gain experience working at the ICJ. It aims to improve participants’ understanding of international law and of the Court’s procedures by actively involving them in the work of the Court and allowing them to build on their experience under the supervision of a judge.

Under the MoU, the Government is prepared to sponsor the Academy’s nominated candidate(s), if accepted by the ICJ, for their living expenses and other necessary costs for participating in the Programme.

Dr Anthony Neoh SC, the Chairman of the Academy, welcomes signing of the MoU. He applauds the generous support from the Government reflecting its commitment to the nurturing of legal talents in researching and developing international law in Asia. This is also consonant with the Government’s commitment to the Vision 2030 for Rule of Law and contribution to the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, in particular Goal 16.

The Academy is an independent and non-profit organisation established in Hong Kong with the aim to facilitate the study, research, and development of international law in Asia. In due course, the Academy will launch the selection and nomination process for the next round of the Programme.
