Symposium on Contemporary Issues of
International Law

On 14th October 2024, Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL) had the pleasure of hosting the Symposium on Contemporary Issues of International Law that was attended by delegates of InterAction Council which include Dr Danilo Türk (Former President of Slovenia), Dr Péter Medgyessy (Former Prime Minister of Hungary), Mr Boris Tadić (Former President of Serbia), Dr Essam Sharaf (Former Prime Minister of Egypt), Mr Petar Stoyanov (Former President of Bulgaria), and Mr Henry Wen (Chief Representative of the InterAction Council Beijing Office).

InterAction Council is an independent international organisation with the aim to mobilise the experience, energy, and international contacts of a group of high-ranking statesmen, in an effort to promote global governance.

At the Symposium, Ms Teresa Cheng GBM GBS SC JP, Founder Member and Co-Chairman of AAIL, welcomed the delegates and said ‘AAIL aims to promote the study and understanding of international law in Asia and beyond’. She shared the importance of AAIL in providing training for delegates from Asian African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) Member States. Delegates from the InterAction Council shared views on the importance of international law and multilateralism, whilst noting the limitations of the compliance of international law at times in dealing with difficult issues facing States. Professor Huang Jiefang, Secretary-General of AAIL, shared his views on the challenges facing developing countries in contemporary issues such as climate change and resources sharing in the context of international law. The delegates also learned about the success of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ being practised in Hong Kong and expressed keen interest in Hong Kong’s role as a leading dispute resolution centre.

This Symposium is the first step in exchanges between AAIL and InterAction Council. It also lays a very good foundation for the two organisations to explore further collaboration.
