One-Day Course of The Hague Academy of International Law: International Comparative Law
Over 100 legal practitioners and scholars as well as law students were drawn to the One-Day Course on International Comparative Law in Hong Kong, which was expertly delivered by Professor Matthias Lehmann from the University of Vienna.
After the welcoming remarks from our Founder Member & Co-Chairman, Ms Teresa Cheng GBM GBS SC JP, and the Secretary-General of The Hague Academy of International Law, Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin, Professor Lehmann started with a general introduction on the legal traditions around the world and the sources and methods of private international law. Then, he proceeded to discuss the issue of jurisdiction, covering the sources of law , the jurisdiction in civil and common law, and choice-of-court agreements. Following that, Professor Lehmann delved into more specific issues by juxtaposing conflicts solutions in the specific area of contracts and torts in a comparative manner. At the end of the Course, our Secretary-General, Professor Huang Jiefang, conveyed sincere appreciation to Professor Lehmann for his informative and engaging presentation which inspired lively discussion among the audiences.
The Course not only enhanced participants’ knowledge, but also encouraged dialogue among legal professionals from different jurisdictions around the globe, reinforcing the importance of comparative law in today’s interconnected world.
