Integrating ESG Principles in Dispute Resolution: Harnessing Online Dispute Resolution for Effective Implementation

31 March 2025

As an affiliated event of the 22nd Willem C. Vis East International Arbitration Moot, it commenced with opening remarks delivered by representatives of the organisers, Mr Norman Nip (Board Director of eBRAM) and Mr Adrian Lai (Deputy Secretary-General of AAIL), emphasising the importance of integrating ESG principles into dispute resolution and the transformative role of online dispute resolution (ODR) in this respect.

This was followed by presentations on ‘Innovations in Online Dispute Resolution: The Role of iGLIP and ODR’s Global Trends’. Mr Albert Leung (Acting CEO & CTO of eBRAM) introduced eBRAM’s latest innovations in ODR, showcasing how AI, blockchain, and cloud computing enhance dispute resolution through features such as real-time transcription, machine translation, and digital verification of customer’s identity. Mr Adrian Lai shared how ODR advances ESG goals by reducing reliance on physical proceedings, promoting sustainability, and ensuring fair, efficient dispute resolution. He also introduced the iGLIP (Inclusive Global Legal Innovation Platform) on ODR, a key initiative to facilitate the studies on ODR related issues internationally.

It concluded with a panel discussion on ‘Integrating ESG Principles in ODR: Challenges, Opportunities, and Best Practices’. The discussion covered various issues, noting that ODR promotes fair, efficient, and sustainable dispute resolution and that legal professionals play a crucial role in advocating for the use of ODR as corporates show greater demand for ESG-aligned dispute resolution.
