2018 Investment Law and Investor-State Mediator Training

Organisers:
ICSID
Department of Justice of the Hong Kong SAR
Asian Academy of International Law

As the very first of its kind in Asia, this jointly organised capacity-building event was a seven-day training course specifically focusing on both investment law and investor-State mediator training. A group of renowned trainers were invited to lead this intensive training course by sharing their solid expertise and rich experience in these two areas with over 50 legal practitioners and government delegates. In the first half of the training course, fundamental concepts, treaties, case studies and topical issues were introduced and examined closely, including substantive protections, national treatment, the ICSID Convention, the New York Convention, the Vienna Convention, State responsibility, the investor-State dispute settlement reform, the process and options for dispute resolution etc. With mediation receiving increasing attention and recognition, the second half of the training course attempted to build participants’ knowledge and refine their skill in utilising mediation in handling international investment disputes. Through both lectures and role plays, different styles of mediation and viable methods were discussed and demonstrated.
